The journal is comprised of two whaling voyages. From pages 1–117, the first voyage of the log documents the Parachute (Ship) of New Bedford, Mass., mastered by Nehemiah C. Fisher, kept by George Swain, from June 8, 1848 – March 30, 1851, to the Northwest Pacific and the Sea of Okhotsk. Whale species seen or taken include blackfish, bowhead, finback, humpback, right, sperm, and sulphur bottom. Ports of call included the Fayal Azores, Maui and Oahu (Hawaii), and the Cook Islands. Beginning on page 118, the second voyage partially documents the Frances Henrietta (Ship) of New Bedford, Mass., mastered by George Swain, with entries kept by the captain’s wife, Mary Jane Swain, from June 17, 1851 – April 28, 1855, to the Arctic Ocean and the Sea of Okhotsk. Very descriptive journal of seafaring life, including descriptions of accidents, outbreak of measles onboard, death, and perspectives of women at sea.
